What was the best gift you’ve ever received?
“A flight to Florida to see my best friend who moved when I was in 7th grade. It was the first time I cried happy tears.”
“I am required by law to say my wife and my children, in that order; without specifying the order of the children.”
“Two years ago my mom’s coworker was selling a set of Blue Nordic dinnerware from the 60’s in early October. My mom saw the pattern and immediately knew I would love it. It was the first time she had ever bought a Christmas gift that early, and she was SO excited to give it to me. Like for months she was talking about how excited she was for me to open it on Christmas day. Christmas rolls around and I open it and there were two reasons why it was the best gift I had ever received. First, it’s the best china pattern in the world and I hadn’t even seen it prior to that day and I instantly fell in love with them. Secondly and more importantly, because my mom was so excited to give it to me and there was love behind the gift. Even though it’s china and people say it’s only supposed to be used for special occasions, I use those plates and bowls every day of my life.”
“An original copy of Pride and Prejudice (my favorite book) from my parents.”
What’s your favorite holiday tradition?
“There’s a neighborhood back home that goes all out on Christmas lights for their houses. My family will always get in the back of the pickup truck with blankets and hot chocolate and ride through the neighborhood to see the lights.”
“Feast of the 7 fishes - It is a Catholic Italian tradition where we eat 7 different kinds of seafood on Christmas Eve to represent the 7 holy sacraments. We roast oysters, have crab cakes, calamari, clams casino, she crab soup, shrimp, scallops, smoked salmon, we do it all! We have been doing it with my Dad’s family for as long as I cam remember and it brings back amazing memories of being in my Nonnie and Poppies house with all my cousins and family! It is my favorite tradition of the WHOLE year!”
“Visiting my parents and making tamales. We reheat and and have them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.”
“Reading the “Night Before Christmas” before going to bed on Christmas Eve. I did it every year growing up and now do the same with my children.”
“A group of my husband’s friends have a get together for the Sunday before Thanksgiving! This has been going on for over 30 years. This Christmas celebration has been named “Thanksmas”. We eat almost all day long and drink quite a bit of wine. Each person has a large stocking and all the friends place little FUN items in the stockings that represent the personalities of the person and the travels that they have been in the past year! So much laughter and great fellowship with friends that we do not get to see very often.”
“Beer Tree - we invite all the neighbors over, drink beer, and throw empty beer cans at a Christmas tree set up on the porch. They stick to the tree and it’s a ‘decorated’ tree.”
